The basics · 6 min

Draw dice, then roll them

Build a dice bag, keep drawing separate from rolling, and return the same physical copies.

Before you start

Use Rollnook 1.2 or later. In Library, choose + → New Set → Bag of dice.

What you will make

A five-die bag that draws two dice at a time and rolls only the extracted copies.

  1. Draw 2 of 5
  2. Roll those 2
  3. Return or keep them out

Put five dice in the bag

From the set overview, open Pieces and then the dice bag. Tap d6 five times to add five physical copies. You can mix designs or sizes. Token bags and dice bags are separate components.

Set Draw count to 2. A die added inside the bag waits to be drawn. A loose die added to the set goes directly on the tray.

Extract first

Start a new game and tap Draw. Two of the five dice leave the bag. Their identities are now known, but they do not have a rolled result yet.

Roll becomes available when the tray is ready. This bag cannot draw again while its extracted dice are waiting to be rolled or returned.

Roll the extracted dice

Tap Roll. The extracted dice now receive face values. A later extraction rolls its new dice without rerolling the earlier batch.

With a turn sequence, a step containing a dice bag pauses after extraction and waits for the roll before it advances. Rerolls apply to that step’s extracted group.

Decide when dice return

Return dice after rolling puts the copies back after their roll, so all five can be drawn again. It does not return them at extraction time. If a programmed step allows rerolls, the dice return when that step finishes.

With return off, rolled dice stay out. Return them from Inventory or start a new round. Refill itself can refill an empty bag with dice already rolled; pending dice must be rolled or returned first.

Keep choice and chance separate

Before playing → Dice to roll lets a player choose among dice that are already outside the bag. Draw first, then choose the dice to roll. Any unchosen extracted dice remain out and can be rolled on a later turn or returned from Inventory.

To choose a pool inside the bag before randomly extracting, use Pieces available for a random draw. To take exact copies without randomness, use Visible pieces to take. A dice draw still needs a separate roll.

For the simpler rule “choose two of five, then roll”, start with five loose dice and use Before playing. No bag is needed when the player chooses the dice directly.

Share a bag or give each player their own

Shared gives everyone the same remaining pool. One each creates an independent bag for each player. Add another bag for a second pool, or loose dice for a mixed game. All of them remain components of one set.

YOUR TEST

Check it works.

Draw two dice and roll them. With return off, three remain inside. Draw again and verify that only the new pair rolls. With return on, all five should be available after each roll.

If something feels off

Why is Draw disabled?

The bag may still have unrolled dice outside, be empty without automatic refill, or be unavailable in the current phase. Roll or return pending dice, and check whose turn it is.

Why do I still see the previous result after the dice return?

The tray shows the last result for reference. Returned dice are back in the bag and must be drawn again before another roll.
